Abstract: Some political scientists argue that cleavages, especially the class cleavage, no longer represent a significant point of political conflict. This book takes issue with this claim, demonstrating that other cleavages structure party competition. This is nowhere more evident than in the European Alpine region. In “Challenges to Consensual Politics”, Caramani and Mény (2003) maintain that ethno-linguistic, centre-periphery, religious, and rural-urban factors continued to survive, indeed thrive, in the Alpine region, informing the party politics of territories such as Switzerland, South Tyrol, Lombardy, Austria, Bavaria and Valle dAosta. This book examines how issues relating to territory and identity have (re)emerged and have been strengthened in the Alpine region, overlapping with class and ideological dimensions of party politics. Decentralisation and supranational integration pose specific challenges and opportunities for political actors in the region, who must now negotiate between competing pressures – local, regional, national, supranational and global ones – and focus their strategies on multiple levels. In particular, political parties face the challenge of maintaining regional, cultural, and linguistic identities whilst responding to the perceived threat of immigration, ‘fuzzy borders’ and multiculturalism hastened by globalisation. The book focuses on strategies employed by political parties operating in the Alpine region and identities common themes and patterns of party competition. The emphasis is primarily on territorial cleavages related to demands for self-determination, and linguistic and cultural protection, while also examining how parties use these issues to inform socio-economic demands. Abstract: Consider these facts. In Italy the right to worship, without discrimination, is enshrined within the constitution. There are 1.35 million Muslims in Italy and yet, officially, only eight mosques in the whole country. One consequence is that the Muslim population have accumulated a huge number of makeshift and temporary places of worship. These are housed in a variety of buildings including lock ups, garages, shops, warehouses and old factories. This shortage of places to worship is particularly acute in north east Italy – where the photographer Nicolò Degiorgis lives – home to many anti-Islamic campaigns headed by the right wing party Lega Nord. The dull images of the many and diverse buildings that house the makeshift mosques are printed on folded pages. You open up the gatefold to reveal the scenes inside the mosques, shot in full colour. The size of the gatherings varies, from large crowds who sometimes pray outside to a small room full to bursting, or to intimate groups of two or three Muslims. Degiorgis provides a fascinating glimpse of hidden world and leaves the conclusions about this project entirely in our own hands. (Verlagstext)

Abstract: Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, and Wyndham Lewis have all, to varying degrees, been the subject of studies that explore their ideology. All too often, however, these studies have not tackled the issue adequately, limiting their analytical approach to fascism or other phenomena such as anti-Semitism. Frequently, they have also sought to exculpate these writers or to normalise their political tendencies in an effort to circumnavigate the dilemma of how to address the paradox of right-wing artists who are both harbingers and opponents of the imagined trajectory of progressive modernity. This interdisciplinary study analyses the connections between literary Modernism and right-wing ideology. Moreover, it is the first academic study to explore the reception of these Modernist authors by today's far right, seeking to understand in what ways they use strategic readings of Modernist texts to legitimise right-wing ideology. By raising fundamental questions about the relationship between aesthetics and politics, this study ultimately challenges its readers to see their cultural practices as political. It wants to make visible and problematize the interdependencies of right-wing ideology and cultural production as well as reception in order to explain the (far) Right as a phenomenon deeply rooted in European history and cultural development. Abstract: India not only is concerned with inevitable multilingualism, but also with the rights of many millions of speakers of minority languages. As the political and cultural context privileges some major languages, linguistic minorities often feel discriminated against by the current language policy of the Union and the States. They experience on a daily basis that their mother tongues are deemed worthless dialects that have little utility in modern life. Many such languages have definitively disappeared, and several more are on the brink of extinction. Is this the inevitable price to be paid for economic modernization, cultural homogenisation and the multilingual fabric of Indias society at large€ This book is an effort to map Indias linguistic minorities and to assess the language policy towards these communities. Abstract: Me and Fashion is a constellation of fashion photographs made by Brigitte Niedermair (born 1971) over the past 20 years. These images show how, informed by her parallel creative path as an independent art photographer, she continues to query and utilize her female perspective to expand the conventions and biases of the fashion image system. Niedermair's photographic collaborators and subjects tend to have training as dancers and can transform themselves into the material expression of the body as a language, adopting an "attitude of resistance" toward the camera. Me and Fashion is published for Niedermair's exhibition at the Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo during the 2019 Venice Biennale. Working with acclaimed photography curator Charlotte Cotton, Niedermair responds to the atmosphere of each room of the Palazzo Mocenigo, replacing historic paintings with her fashion and still-life photographs to both amplify and counter the embedded subtexts of gender and identity that permeate these predominantly 17th-century interiors.

Abstract: In the second volume of the series “Diptera Stelviana”, further results are published from the survey of the Diptera (flies and midges) in the South Tyrol part of the Stilfserjoch National Park (Italian Alps). Five Malaise traps were used, which were set up during the vegetative period of 2005 along a transect from the submontane to the alpine altitudinal zones (940 m to 2,135 m above NHN). After the guest foreword and the editor’s foreword on the impact of the “Nagoya Protocol” on biodiversity research, volume 2 continues with a comprehensive historical account of dipterological research in the South Tyrol since 1860. In the first part of this series which was published in 2008 more than 25.000 specimens of Diptera were dealt with. Abstract: Konzipiert als Abschluss und Überprüfung der vorausgegangenen Expertenarbeit, haben sich die DIAMONT Arbeitspakete 10 und 11 mit der Umsetzung der Beteiligungsprozesse beschäftigt. Sie zielen darauf ab eine Reihe ausgewählter Maßnahmen zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung für die Überprüfung durch die lokalen Interessensvertreter in sechs ausgewählten Testregionen in den Alpen vorzubringen. Auch sollen gemeinsame Lösungsstrategien für ausgewählte Probleme entwickelt werden. Es wurden zwei Workshops pro Testregion durchgeführt, die hauptsächlich dank der Beteiligung nach dem „World Café“ Ansatz laufen konnten.
