Abstract: Can literature be investigated through quantitative methods? Can style, empathy, and prestige be measured? This study attempts to respond to these questions by providing results from a selection of case studies taken from German literature of the 19th through the 21st century, including Goethe's "late style", Felix Salten, and the output of contemporary writers such as Florian Meimberg's "twitterature" and Daniel Glattauer's e-mail novel. Altogether, this study shows how the interplay among literary theory, stylometry, stylistics, sentiment analysis, empirical studies, and archival research can offer new answers to old questions regarding German literature and provide tools to formulate new questions and novel approaches to research.(Umschlagtext)

Abstract: This action research (AR) study concerns an English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP) course taught to undergraduate economics students at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, a trilingual university in Italy whose degree programmes are taught in German, Italian and English. Despite English for Specific Purposes being an approach to address learner needs, no accurate needs analysis had been conducted. Therefore this study instituted a wide-ranging needs analysis and from the data collected a new learner-centred syllabus was developed for the ESAP course that blended elements from both a product and process approach to syllabus design using classroom negotiation to foster productive skills. Abstract: This book sets out to try to understand why segregated schooling still exists, especially in northern Italy in South Tyrol where they practice ‘separate but equal’ education. Supported by the UN, the Austrian and Italian governments, the province is considered a ‘peace model’ due to its consociational approach to dealing with the region’s Nazi and Fascist past, which has led to a ‘negative peace’. The autonomy statutes, which derived from this ‘peace’, resulted in an education system that is linguistically segregated for the purposes of protecting South Tyrol’s ethnolinguistic minorities. Ann Wand is the Founder and Director of The Oxford Method, an online British university preparatory programme for international students interested in attending Britain’s top universities. She is also the Programme Manager for Customised Faculty led programmes in Oxford, England and Florence, Italy at the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS). By examining responses to South Tyrol's education system, and its impact on local group dynamics, this book explores the implications that segregated schooling may have on second language acquisition. This case study will be of interest to students and scholars of Italian studies, anthropology, linguistic ethnography, sociolinguistics, and second language education.

Abstract: Carol Loeb Shloss creates a compelling portrait of a complex relationship of a daughter and her literary-giant father: Ezra Pound and Mary de Rachewiltz, Pound’s child by his long-time mistress, the violinist Olga Rudge. Brought into the world in secret and hidden in the Italian Alps at birth, Mary was raised by German peasant farmers, had Italian identity papers, a German-speaking upbringing, Austrian loyalties common to the area and, perforce, a fascist education. For years, de Rachewiltz had no idea that Pound and Rudge, the benefactors who would sporadically appear, were her father and mother. Abstract: Some political scientists argue that cleavages, especially the class cleavage, no longer represent a significant point of political conflict. This book takes issue with this claim, demonstrating that other cleavages structure party competition. This is nowhere more evident than in the European Alpine region. In “Challenges to Consensual Politics”, Caramani and Mény (2003) maintain that ethno-linguistic, centre-periphery, religious, and rural-urban factors continued to survive, indeed thrive, in the Alpine region, informing the party politics of territories such as Switzerland, South Tyrol, Lombardy, Austria, Bavaria and Valle dAosta. This book examines how issues relating to territory and identity have (re)emerged and have been strengthened in the Alpine region, overlapping with class and ideological dimensions of party politics. Decentralisation and supranational integration pose specific challenges and opportunities for political actors in the region, who must now negotiate between competing pressures – local, regional, national, supranational and global ones – and focus their strategies on multiple levels. In particular, political parties face the challenge of maintaining regional, cultural, and linguistic identities whilst responding to the perceived threat of immigration, ‘fuzzy borders’ and multiculturalism hastened by globalisation. The book focuses on strategies employed by political parties operating in the Alpine region and identities common themes and patterns of party competition. The emphasis is primarily on territorial cleavages related to demands for self-determination, and linguistic and cultural protection, while also examining how parties use these issues to inform socio-economic demands. Abstract: Consider these facts. In Italy the right to worship, without discrimination, is enshrined within the constitution. There are 1.35 million Muslims in Italy and yet, officially, only eight mosques in the whole country. One consequence is that the Muslim population have accumulated a huge number of makeshift and temporary places of worship. These are housed in a variety of buildings including lock ups, garages, shops, warehouses and old factories. This shortage of places to worship is particularly acute in north east Italy – where the photographer Nicolò Degiorgis lives – home to many anti-Islamic campaigns headed by the right wing party Lega Nord. The dull images of the many and diverse buildings that house the makeshift mosques are printed on folded pages. You open up the gatefold to reveal the scenes inside the mosques, shot in full colour. The size of the gatherings varies, from large crowds who sometimes pray outside to a small room full to bursting, or to intimate groups of two or three Muslims. Degiorgis provides a fascinating glimpse of hidden world and leaves the conclusions about this project entirely in our own hands. (Verlagstext)

As the political and cultural context privileges some major languages, linguistic minorities often feel discriminated against by the current language policy of the Union and the States. They experience on a daily basis that their mother tongues are deemed worthless dialects that have little utility in modern life. Many such languages have definitively disappeared, and several more are on the brink of extinction. Is this the inevitable price to be paid for economic modernization, cultural homogenisation and the multilingual fabric of Indias society at large€ This book is an effort to map Indias linguistic minorities and to assess the language policy towards these communities. Grundsätzlich geht es in der internationalen Nahrungsforschung darum, unterschiedliche Diätverhalten zu analysieren und zu untersuchen, wie sich der Lebensstil auf Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden auswirkt. Bei der Tagung im Touriseum sprachen die Referenten Schlüsselaspekte der gegenwärtigen Debatten über Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden in einer Vielzahl von Kulturen an. Entsprechend breit gefächert ist die Palette der im englischsprachigen Tagungsband abgehandelten Themen. Abstract: Konzipiert als Abschluss und Überprüfung der vorausgegangenen Expertenarbeit, haben sich die DIAMONT Arbeitspakete 10 und 11 mit der Umsetzung der Beteiligungsprozesse beschäftigt. Sie zielen darauf ab eine Reihe ausgewählter Maßnahmen zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung für die Überprüfung durch die lokalen Interessensvertreter in sechs ausgewählten Testregionen in den Alpen vorzubringen. Auch sollen gemeinsame Lösungsstrategien für ausgewählte Probleme entwickelt werden. Es wurden zwei Workshops pro Testregion durchgeführt, die hauptsächlich dank der Beteiligung nach dem „World Café“ Ansatz laufen konnten. Sie haben unter anderem gezeigt, dass vor allem ein gemeinsamer Kernpunkt stark regional geprägt ist: die Fähigkeit das lokale Eigentum zu verwalten, um die Herausforderungen angehen zu können, die sich aus dem sich ständig verändernden Wettbewerb zwischen den Regionen ergeben. Dies schließt auch ein, im richtigen räumlichen, zeitlichen und institutionellen Blickwinkel zu arbeiten, sowie die kulturelle und soziale Identität durch Zusammenarbeit und durch die Beteiligung der Öffentlichkeit an Entscheidungsprozessen zu stärken.
