Abstract: Dieser Bildband ist ein kleines Fenster in eine grosse Welt. Er zeigt den Alltag in den verschiedensten Ecken des afrikanischen Kontinents. Ein Alltag, der in der westlichen Berichterstattung so nicht existiert. Er ist nicht spektakulär, nicht aufsehenerregend, dieser Alltag, aber immer gegenwärtig. Er ist farbig und banal, manchmal widersprüchlich, aber stets kostbar und echt. In I love to dress like I am coming from somewhere and I have a place to go zeigt die Schweizer Fotografin Flurina Rothenberger die Realität fernab von Stereotypen und Klischees. Lokal, unmittelbar und über die letzten zehn Jahre hinweg so, wie sie sie auf privaten sowie geschäftlichen Reisen angetroffen hat. Selbst in Westafrika aufgewachsen, weiss die Künstlerin um die Ambiguitäten, Sitten und das breite Spektrum dieses unermesslichen Kontinents mit seinen 54 Staaten. Indem sie den Alltag nüchtern porträtiert, Schriftsteller, Aktivisten, Musiker oder Ökonomen zitiert, leistet sie einen dringlichen Beitrag zur Einordnung. Nicht explizit, sondern subtil. Denn der afrikanische Kontinent selbst ist subtil, schwer zu durchschauen und durchdringend komplex. Auch Flurina Rothenbergers erstes Künstlerbuch, das 2004 in der Edition Patrick Frey erschien, widmet sich dieser Komplexität: I don't know where I'm going but I'm on the way zeigt den Alltag der westafrikanischen Community in Zürich. Ein Alltag, der geprägt ist vom Hin-und-hergerissen-Sein. Ein Alltag, der mit Vorurteilen hadert. Hier und dort als ewiger Kontext, als Prämisse-Flurina Rothenberger räumt mit Stereotypen auf, indem sie Realitäten dokumentiert.
