Abstract: Dieses erste Buch von Gilbert & George erschien 1971 in einer kleinen Auflage im Verlag der Gebrüder König, Köln / New York. Das lange Zeit vergriffene Buch wurde nun endlich wieder aufgelegt. In dem kurzen Vorwort wird es als eine zeitgenössische Romanskulptur beschrieben. Für das Künstlerpaar ist es Manifest oder eine Proklamation ihrer Sicht auf das Lebens und die Kunst in Form poetischer Texte und Bilder.Das Buch gliedert sich in drei Kapitel mit einer Abfolge von Doppelseiten, auf denen jeweils die typografisch elegant gesetzten Texte mit einem einzigen Bild kombiniert werden, die sich so einander ergänzen und prägen.Wie bei der Erstausgabe fällt auch bei dieser Ausgabe von Side by Side der von Hand marmorierte Umschlag ins Auge, der jedes Exemplar zu einem künstlerischen Unikat macht. Abstract: Schwarzweiß-Bilder, in denen er Kontraste herausarbeitet wie mit dem Seziermesser: Vom Grashalm im See über kahle Lärchenwälder und Lawinenzäune im Schnee bis hin zu Wolkenspielen an der Tofana. Stets sind Kontrast und Licht die wichtigsten Stellschrauben bei der Bildgestaltung. Mathis’ Fotos sind solche, die umso stärker wirken, je länger man sie anschaut. Freilich vermarkten Fotografen in Bildbänden häufig vor allem sich selbst. Es ist kaum vorstellbar, diese Bilder der mörderisch kurzen Halbwertszeit digitaler Medien auszusetzen. So gesehen ist Visual Dualism – Dolomites die logische Konsequenz, diese großartigen Fotos der Dolomiten angemessen zu präsentieren. (alpin.de)

Abstract: On 19 June 1992 Austria and Italy declared the official resolution of the South Tyrol question - the dispute that had dominated relations between the two countries since the end of the First World War. While this bilingual province is today held up as a triumph of minority rights protection and a model for post-conflict societies across the world, the story of the South Tyrol since its amalgamation into the Italian state in 1919 has been a complex and often turbulent one. This book investigates the political role of the theatre in reflecting, shaping and subverting patterns of cultural identity among the German-speaking South Tyrolese. Taking as its starting point the representation of history in a series of ambitious theatrical productions from the 1970s to the present, this study offers close readings of texts and performances and an examination of the belated development of professional theatre in the province. The role of theatre is analysed in terms of the broader historical and sociocultural factors at play in the shaping of South Tyrolese identity. (Pressetext)

Abstract: Value is arguably one of the key concepts of the globalized world. This title features essays on classical philosophical sources on value, and, on the other, readings that show how the concept of value shapes our manner of thinking in pivotal issues and domains of economics, culture, and knowledge. Value is arguably one of the key concepts of the globalized world. In this world, to be is to be or have a value, while all thinking and implementing has the form of valuing and evaluating. Thanks to their operative expediency, both the concept of value and thinking through values appear as sufficient and such as not to need any interrogation as to their provenance and implications. The essays of this volume, on the other hand, provide insights precisely in these aspects by presenting, on the one hand, classical philosophical sources on value, and, on the other, readings that show how the concept of value shapes our manner of thinking in pivotal issues and domains of economics, culture, and knowledge. Ivo De Gennaro is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. He has published Logos Heidegger lies Heraklit (2001), Dasein, Da-sein. Abstract: Some political scientists argue that cleavages, especially the class cleavage, no longer represent a significant point of political conflict. This book takes issue with this claim, demonstrating that other cleavages structure party competition. This is nowhere more evident than in the European Alpine region. In “Challenges to Consensual Politics”, Caramani and Mény (2003) maintain that ethno-linguistic, centre-periphery, religious, and rural-urban factors continued to survive, indeed thrive, in the Alpine region, informing the party politics of territories such as Switzerland, South Tyrol, Lombardy, Austria, Bavaria and Valle dAosta. This book examines how issues relating to territory and identity have (re)emerged and have been strengthened in the Alpine region, overlapping with class and ideological dimensions of party politics. Decentralisation and supranational integration pose specific challenges and opportunities for political actors in the region, who must now negotiate between competing pressures – local, regional, national, supranational and global ones – and focus their strategies on multiple levels. In particular, political parties face the challenge of maintaining regional, cultural, and linguistic identities whilst responding to the perceived threat of immigration, ‘fuzzy borders’ and multiculturalism hastened by globalisation. The book focuses on strategies employed by political parties operating in the Alpine region and identities common themes and patterns of party competition. The emphasis is primarily on territorial cleavages related to demands for self-determination, and linguistic and cultural protection, while also examining how parties use these issues to inform socio-economic demands. Moreover, the focus is on how Alpine parties operate on multiple levels – the regional, national and European one – and how they have in some cases moved from ‘protest parties’ to parties in power.
