Abstract: The visual landscape north of the Alps between the 14th and 16th centuries was shaped by colossal representations of epic and mythological giants, reincarnated and cast as Christian heroes. In contexts religious or lay, private or public, giants dominated urban spaces but also rural ones. They were painted on church facades and stood tall as sculptures in town squares. Rather than portraying specific characters from particular texts, the figures embodied the notion of “the gigantic” as it appeared in contemporary writings: superhuman creatures from foreign lands and liminal geographies, often associated with supernatural powers, magic, hypermasculinity, and, concomitantly, matriarchy. Since the naming and identity of these giants do not always correlate--thus destabilizing the images' semiotics--the gap could be filled by fabricated memories of the ancient world. Hence, imagery of giants bridged mythological, biblical, and contemporary times, while producing novel political metaphors. This book explores the role and function of the vision and the experience of the gigantic. Executed “out of scale” and communicating ideas about excess, giants were experienced as physically and ethically abject and, at the same time, as magnificent, apotropaic, and redemptive; as such they came to embody the very notion of the medieval sublime. Abstract: Can literature be investigated through quantitative methods? Can style, empathy, and prestige be measured? This study attempts to respond to these questions by providing results from a selection of case studies taken from German literature of the 19th through the 21st century, including Goethe's "late style", Felix Salten, and the output of contemporary writers such as Florian Meimberg's "twitterature" and Daniel Glattauer's e-mail novel. Altogether, this study shows how the interplay among literary theory, stylometry, stylistics, sentiment analysis, empirical studies, and archival research can offer new answers to old questions regarding German literature and provide tools to formulate new questions and novel approaches to research.(Umschlagtext)

Abstract: This book sets out to try to understand why segregated schooling still exists, especially in northern Italy in South Tyrol where they practice ‘separate but equal’ education. Supported by the UN, the Austrian and Italian governments, the province is considered a ‘peace model’ due to its consociational approach to dealing with the region’s Nazi and Fascist past, which has led to a ‘negative peace’. The autonomy statutes, which derived from this ‘peace’, resulted in an education system that is linguistically segregated for the purposes of protecting South Tyrol’s ethnolinguistic minorities. Ann Wand is the Founder and Director of The Oxford Method, an online British university preparatory programme for international students interested in attending Britain’s top universities. She is also the Programme Manager for Customised Faculty led programmes in Oxford, England and Florence, Italy at the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS). By examining responses to South Tyrol's education system, and its impact on local group dynamics, this book explores the implications that segregated schooling may have on second language acquisition. This case study will be of interest to students and scholars of Italian studies, anthropology, linguistic ethnography, sociolinguistics, and second language education.
